OBJECTIVES
1. Students will be able to identify and write fractions (1/2, 1/4, 3/4).
2. Students will understand the concept of equal parts.
3. Students will apply fractions to real-life situations.
4. Students with IEP goals will be addressed in differentiated instruction to meet their diverse needs.
MOTIVATION: Students coloring /cutting paper in 1/2 half, 1/4 one fourth, 2/4, 3/4 three fourth (See Demo: Common Core)
MATERIALS
1. Whiteboard and markers
2. Displayed fraction charts and diagrams / worksheet
3. Manipulatives (e.g., fraction tiles, blocks)
4. Real-life examples (e.g., pizza, cake)
DEVELOPMENT:
1. Introduction (10 minutes):
- Introduce fractions using real-life examples. ( 1. Explain to students that sharing is a way of showing kindness.) (Explain that people share in quantity or (#fraction or pieces of a whole object 1/2, 1/4, 3/4) notice top number or numerator, / division sign, bottom number or denominator (Let's watch) watch this video of demonstration of equal parts.
2. Direct Instruction (15 minutes):
- Using manipulatives (blocks, tile or paper, marker) to demonstrate writing fractions (1/2, 1/4, 3/4) concepts to students. Encourage students to write and understands terms: #Fraction, #Numerator, #Denominator
3. Guided Practice (15 minutes):
- In cooperative learning settings make students work in pairs to match equivalent fractions using visual aids to support understanding of Real-Life Examples: Connect math concepts to real-life situations to increase student engagement.
4. Independent Practice (15 minutes):
- Provide students with worksheets to practice writing and identifying fractions.
5. Provide Feedback: Offer regular feedback to students to support their learning.
